This strain represents the culmination of decades of selective breeding work, with its Athene lineage tracing back to BioVortex's original work beginning in 1996. The Athene parent was selected from outstanding flowers collected in 1996 and was later crossed with various strains to create the powerful Athene Sour Kush II phenotype, which tested above 29% THC in 2013, a remarkably high level for that time period. The Black Dog component brings the genetic influence of Blackberry Kush and Emerald Headband, contributing to the strain's complex berry and fuel characteristics.

The strain exhibits indica-dominant growth patterns with beautiful large leaves and vigorous structure, producing dense, frosty flowers with particularly large trichomes.
