Also known as: Russian Ruderalis, Siberian Ruderalis, Auto-flowering Cannabis, Ruderal Hemp

Cannabis Ruderalis Strain Overview

Cannabis ruderalis is a variety, subspecies, or species of Cannabis native to Central and Eastern Europe and Russia. It contains a relatively low quantity of psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and does not require photoperiod to blossom (unlike C. indica and C. sativa). During a field trip in southern Siberia in 1942 the Russian botanist Janischewski discovered cannabis ruderalis, the third family of cannabis. Studying the known cannabis families of the Volga River region at the time he soon realized he had discovered something new. The name derives from the Latin term "ruderal," referring to plants that grow in waste areas and disturbed soil.

This species is smaller than other species of the genus, rarely growing over 0.61 metres (2 feet) in height. The plants have "thin, slightly fibrous stems" with little branching. This is the most notable characteristic of the Ruderalis strain, its capacity to flower (and therefore reproduce) according to an individual plant's age. Cannabis Ruderalis will begin flowering when it achieves a certain stage of maturity – normally after about five to seven weeks of growth. C. ruderalis is traditionally used in Russian and Mongolian folk medicine, especially for uses in treating depression. Today, ruderalis genetics form the foundation of all modern autoflowering cannabis strains, valued for their ability to complete full life cycles in harsh climates where photoperiod-dependent varieties cannot survive.

Cannabis Ruderalis Strain Growing Information

C. ruderalis reaches maturity much quicker than other species of Cannabis, typically 5–7 weeks after being planted from seed. Cultivators also favor ruderalis plants due to their reduced production time, typically finishing in 3–4 months rather than 6–8 months. The adaptation of Cannabis Ruderalis to short, cool summers can be seen in other traits. Ruderalis has the ability to complete its life cycle – from being a seed to producing seeds – in just 10 weeks (though 12 to 14 weeks is more common). Extremely hardy and cold-resistant, thrives in poor soils and harsh climates. Auto-flowering trait eliminates need for light schedule management. Suitable for indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cultivation. Low nutrient requirements, sensitive to nutrient burn. Can survive frost and extreme weather conditions that would kill other cannabis varieties.
