Finola Strain Overview

Finola is a low THC hemp variety from Finland that is primarily used to produce hempseed. It was the first example of an industrial oilseed variety of hemp, recognised by Canada in 1998 and then in the EU by 2003. Developed in Finland in 1995 under the breeder's code FIN-314, the cultivar resulted from an open pollinated multiplication of two northern Russian accessions from the Vavilov Institute - specifically strains VIR-313 and VIR-315.

This historic cultivar holds several important distinctions in cannabis breeding: FINOLA was the first example of auto flowering Cannabis, and has been the most popular variety grown in Canada since 2005. This variety was primarily developed for the production of hempseed grain, instead of a fiber. It was the first registered hemp variety to have the auto flowering trait. The plant exhibits short stature and compact growth, reaching 1 - 2 meters in height with absent to very weak branching. Finola is a day neutral (autoflowering) hemp varietal that completes the growth cycle in 100/120 days maximum, allowing for multiple crops per season.
