Hopar Valley '23 Selection #4 is an authentic first-generation (P1) landrace strain from the Hopar Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, collected and preserved by the Indian Landrace Exchange. This strain originates from a small bowl valley located at the base of the Spantik and Hopar glaciers at approximately 2,500 meters elevation and 36°N latitude, in the Karakoram mountain region. Cannabis cultivation in Hopar Valley has significantly declined over the past 3-4 decades, transitioning from a primary crop to a secondary cultivation grown on the periphery of food crop fields.

This selection exhibits the characteristic adaptations of high-altitude cannabis varieties, featuring exceptionally dense resin glands of notably larger size, which aid in producing and storing higher volumes of cannabinoids and terpenes. Many plants express vibrant purple and anthocyanin coloration, primarily on the floral bracts, with some showing color production in both leaves and bracts. The strain demonstrates the typical morphology of landrace varieties adapted to extreme conditions, with medium-tall stature, moderate side branching, broad leaflets, and fibrous stalks and stems, similar to other subtropical highland varieties but with broader leaves to maximize light absorption during shorter mountain growing seasons.
