Kalinga

Sativa

Also known as: Kalinga Stalk, Philippines Landrace, Violeta Kalinga

Kalinga Strain Overview

Kalinga is a landrace strain native to the Kalinga province of the Philippines, grown by native farmers in isolated highland locations. As a landrace, it is not a hybrid, indica, or sativa in the traditional sense, instead possessing unique characteristics specific to its geographic origin. The Kalinga province, located in the Cordillera Highlands in central Luzon island, produces 70% of the Philippines' marijuana. The great Philippine tropical/subtropical climate with fertile soils and high altitude creates perfect conditions to develop high THC/low CBD ganja.

Kalinga buds are typically small to medium in size with a dense and compact structure, featuring dark green leaves coated in trichomes that give them a frosty appearance. The buds can be quite resinous and sticky to the touch. During maturation and exposure to low temperatures, plants can develop beautiful purple/red coloration with an aroma reminiscent of sweet wild grapes mixed with mountain spices. The plant structure is conical with long internodal spaces and leaves with 5, 7 and 9 bright green leaflets. Some plants develop asymmetrical branches while others are characterized by long floral clusters with towers in the main branch of 80cm or more. Due to strict laws against cannabis cultivation in the Philippines which can result in life imprisonment, local farmers are extremely cautious, making seeds from this region very difficult to obtain. The war on cannabis and introduction of foreign genetics have already caused many Filipino landraces to disappear.

Kalinga Strain Growing Information

For indoor cultivation, it is recommended to start with a 12/12 photoperiod immediately due to its vigorous growth. The vegetative stage can go from 10-14 weeks with a flowering cycle of 12-14 weeks. Plants reach great heights quickly, measuring 2.5-3+ metres in their natural outdoor environment. These are very sativa dominant plants that are vigorous and resistant to extreme drought conditions. Outdoor flowering time is approximately 91 days (13 weeks). Regional maturation occurs from mid-October through November at latitude 17°N. This strain is recommended for collectors and growers looking for an easy-to-grow sativa with exceptional mold resistance and fruity terpenes. Plants have shown good resistance to low temperatures, wind and rain. Some hermaphrodite tendencies have been reported, which may require several generations of breeding to reduce.
