Laughing Buddha Strain Overview

Laughing Buddha is a sativa-dominant hybrid bred by Barney's Farm in the Netherlands from landrace genetics. This strain combines genetics from Thai and Jamaican landrace strains, creating a mesmerizing blend of 75% sativa and 25% indica. The strain is an award-winning sativa that won Third Place in the 2003 High Times Cannabis Cup. The driving force behind Barney's Farm and creator of Laughing Buddha is Derry, an old-school cannabis grower who spent the 1970s and 1980s travelling through Asia and the Middle East collecting landrace cannabis seeds, eventually settling in the Himalayas before returning to Holland to found Barney's Farm.

Cannabis enthusiasts familiar with the uniquely spindly, tapered bud structure of Jamaican and Thai will see the influence of these strains in flowers of Laughing Buddha, with large blossoms that are more elongated than spherical, leaves that are a dull shade of yellow-green with a relatively fluffy, ragged texture, and cloudy white trichomes covering the buds giving them an icy appearance. A well-cured batch of Laughing Buddha buds should smell sweet and fruity, with notable hints of citrus layered atop earthy undertones and a spicy, peppery kick, with similar taste dominated by sweet fruit notes followed by an earthy and spicy exhale. The strain may be named for its Thai roots, as Thailand is a historical center of Theravada Buddhism.

Laughing Buddha Strain Growing Information

Laughing Buddha has a very long flowering time of 11 to 12 weeks when grown indoors and is ready for harvest at the end of October when grown outdoors. Indoor yields can reach 500-600g/m² while outdoor operations can net up to 700g per plant. The plant develops big, dense and heavy buds covered in trichomes and grows up to 1m in height. Due to its sativa height, it needs either accommodation by grow space or regular pruning early in vegetative stage, and growers may want to bolster the plant's tall stalks with stakes during flowering. Ideally, temperature should range between 20-30°C (68-86°F) during daylight hours and not drop below 15°C (59°F) at night. During vegetative stage, it flourishes best under 50-70% relative humidity, gradually lowering to around 40-50% during flowering. This is a stress-resistant strain that handles training and occasional nutrient deficiencies very well, with broken branches healing surprisingly quickly.
