This strain is derived from a crossing between a line of Zamal from Reunion Island and Lakshmi genetics from South India. Zamal is a strain that reached Reunion Island and acclimatized to the point of growing spontaneously as a pure landrace for over two centuries, originally introduced by slaves from Africa and India who brought different varieties of Zamal to the island for spiritual and medicinal purposes.
With Mango Zamal, growers can expect large foxtail-like colas, with a high calyx-leaf ratio, that can be quickly trimmed and dried. The pure zamal is a wild, untamed strain that exhibits a variety of mainly harmless mutations, but the Mango Zamal hybrid has brought more stability into the genetics while still potentially showing unusual leaf shapes or strange growth patterns. Virtually all Mango Zamal plants have a light mango aroma as they mature, but the final fragrance can vary from mango/carrot to fruity to lemon cleaner.
