Runtz OG is made by Cookies Fam by crossing Zkittlez with Gelato and it is loved for its incredibly fruity flavor profile that smells just like a bag of the sugary candy we all know and love. Popularized by the Runtz crew helmed by Yung LB out of Long Beach, Runtz was named Leafly Strain of the Year in 2020. Runtz is an evenly balanced hybrid strain (50% indica/50% sativa) created through a delicious cross of the infamous Zkittlez X Gelato strains. Bred by a breeder only known as Nick, Runtz was the result of a unique pheno hunt that took place in 2017. Nick eventually partnered with Yung LB, a rapper from Long Beach, and his manager Raybama. Having close ties to Berner and his famous Cookies brand, Nick, Yung LB, and Raybama used a similar type of marketing and branding to propel Runtz and their company—formerly Runtz Crew and now Jokes Up—to fame.
Named for the iconic candy, Runtz brings on a super delicious fruity flavor with tropical citrus and sour berries galore. This bud has dense grape-shaped olive green nugs with thin orange hairs, dark purple undertones and a coating of frosty tiny white purple-tinted crystal trichomes. In 2017, Ray Bama and Young LB officially dropped Runtz at the Emerald Cup, reportedly selling 5 pounds of flower in under 10 minutes. Runtz was then commercialized by Cookies and grew to become the brand's best-selling strain in many markets. The strain's popularity has spawned numerous phenotypes including White Runtz, Pink Runtz, Purple Runtz, and Black Runtz, making it one of the most influential strains in modern cannabis culture.

The Runtz cannabis strain is relatively easy to grow both indoors and outdoors, although growers may face certain challenges with nutrition, training, and managing the tall plants. This strain is indeed a towering monster, and it can reach as much as six feet in height, which might be a tricky moment for beginner growers. Otherwise, high-stress training can always help you tame down the Runtz. Runtz plants typically flower within eight to nine weeks when grown indoors, and they yield a moderately high quantity of buds. Outdoor growers can expect to harvest in late September to early October. Grown indoors, Runtz plants produce around 15 ounces of weed, or only 1-2 ounces of weed per square foot. Outdoors, the yield will be slightly bigger, or around 18 ounces on average per plant. The strain requires moderate growing expertise and responds well to LST and topping techniques. Plants exhibit beautiful color variations during flowering, displaying purples, greens, and orange pistils.
