South Indian Kerala represents a collection of traditional landrace sativa strains originating from the Kerala state in southern India, particularly the mountainous Idukki district in the Western Ghats. Known as Idukki Gold or Kerala Gold (also known as Mahadevan or Neela Chadayan), this strain originated in Idukki in Kerala state of southern India and is internationally renowned as one of the finest cannabis strains in Asia. The equatorial highland district of Idukki, where this accession was collected, is Kerala's most renowned historic centre of ganja cultivation. These pure sativa landraces have played a crucial role in modern cannabis breeding, having played a crucial role in the creation of modern hybrids such as Haze and White Widow. The strain developed its characteristics over centuries in the tropical monsoon climate of the region, positioned at approximately 9 degrees north of the equator.
