Sri Lanka 1977 is a pure sativa landrace strain whose seeds were collected in February 1977 from the Central Province of Sri Lanka at an elevation of 350 metres (1100 feet). The seeds came from farmers who had been growing this plant since before World War II and allegedly had a ready market at the British naval base at Trincomalee until its closure. The current iteration represents the latest inbred line (IBL) of the original plants, carefully preserved to maintain its authentic genetic heritage. The strain exhibits two distinct flower phenotypes - one fluffy and one relatively dense, with both types showing very similar growth patterns and reaching enormous size during vegetative stage unless flowered early or pruned.

According to local historical accounts, cannabis arrived in Sri Lanka through various foreign influences during 18th and 19th century invasions, brought by Dutch, Portuguese, English colonizers and laborers from across the sub-continent and Africa. The original growing region is renowned for diverse agriculture including rice, rubber, tea, vegetables, and exotic spices such as cinnamon, black pepper, and saffron.
