Yarkhun Valley is a rare Pakistani landrace cannabis strain originating from the mountainous Yarkhun Valley in the Hindu Kush region of Upper Chitral, Pakistan, located at approximately 36.27°N latitude and 2,000 meters elevation. The Yarkhun Valley is situated in the Hindu Kush mountains and is considered the source of the Kunar River, with some experts believing this river valley to be the origin of Indica-type Cannabis. This ancient landrace represents one of the traditional charas-producing cultivars from the historic hashish-producing regions of Pakistan. Users report that Yarkhun Valley is not particularly potent, with medium strength effects providing a good combination of physical and head relaxation without being overwhelming. The strain exhibits the narrow-leaflet characteristics typical of old NLD (Narrow Leaf Drug) hashish landraces described by botanist Vavilov, rather than the broader-leafed domesticated Afghanica subspecies found in other parts of the region. Cannabis in the Yarkhun Valley has adapted to the high altitude and UV intensity, with the plant naturally shrinking and expanding its leaves to compensate, while producing more resin to protect itself.
